What if everything you have been told about improving your golf game is pointing you in the wrong direction?
You have spent time on the range. You have watched the videos. You have tried to fix your grip, your stance, your backswing. And yet, Saturday rolls around and you are still walking off the 18th green frustrated, wondering what happened out there.
Here is the truth that nobody is telling you: your swing is not what is costing you strokes. Your decisions are.
You know the feeling. You stripe a few on the range before your round. You feel confident. And then you step up to the first tee and something shifts. By the third hole, you have already made a double bogey, and you spend the next 15 holes chasing the round back.
Sound familiar?
The frustrating part is that you are not a bad golfer. You have the physical ability to hit good shots. But out on the course, something goes sideways. You make a 7 on a par 5 that you should have made a 5 on. You go for a hero shot over the water and it costs you two extra strokes. You three putt greens you had no business three putting.
And after the round, you tell yourself you need more lessons. More range time. A better club. Another YouTube video.
The golfer who shoots 78 does not hit the ball that much better than the golfer who shoots 92. They just make fewer catastrophic decisions.
You keep trying to fix your swing when the real leak in your game is happening between your ears, not in your backswing.
Here is what changes everything.
Tour pros do not hit perfect shots every time. They miss greens. They hit it in the rough. They have off days. But what separates them from the amateur golfer is not the quality of their best shots. It is the quality of their worst decisions.
They know when to be aggressive and when to play safe. They know which shots are high percentage and which ones blow up a scorecard. They have a system that keeps them out of trouble more than it keeps them seeking glory.
When you start thinking about golf as a decision game, everything changes. Suddenly, the goal is not to hit a perfect shot. The goal is to make the smartest play available to you with the swing you have that day.
That one shift alone can take five strokes off your score before you change a single thing about your mechanics.
01
Your Shot Selection Is Usually Too Aggressive
Most golfers aim at the flag on almost every shot. That is the wrong play the majority of the time. The flag is often tucked behind a bunker, near water, or at the edge of the green. When you miss toward the flag, you find trouble. Instead, aim at the fat part of the green. Give yourself the largest possible target. You will miss fewer greens in bad spots, and your scores will drop without a single swing change.
02
Big Numbers Kill Rounds, Not Bad Shots
A bogey will not ruin your round. A triple will. Most of the difference between shooting 88 and shooting 98 is the number of holes where you made a 6 or worse. Start tracking your blow up holes separately. When you get into trouble, your only job is to get out of trouble with the least amount of damage. Not to save the hole. Not to make a miracle shot. Just to stop the bleeding and move on.
03
A Pre Shot Routine Is Your Best Scoring Tool
Every good decision starts with a consistent process. When you walk up to a shot without a plan, your brain defaults to hope. Hope is not a strategy. A simple pre shot routine forces you to slow down, assess the situation, commit to a target, and swing with confidence. Golfers with routines make fewer impulsive decisions. Fewer impulsive decisions means fewer blown holes. Fewer blown holes means lower scores. Simple as that.
Every shot you face on a golf course can be processed through five simple questions. This is the Smart Shot Framework. It takes about 30 seconds. It works for every shot, from the tee to the green.
D
Danger
Where is the trouble on this hole? Water, out of bounds, a bunker you cannot escape from. Identify it first so you know what to avoid.
P
Pattern
What does your ball typically do? If you tend to miss right, aim left. Play your real shot shape, not the one you wish you had.
T
Target
Pick a specific, smart target based on what you know about the danger and your pattern. Not the flag. The right spot for this shot and this moment.
R
Routine
Go through your pre shot routine every single time. Stand behind the ball, visualize the shot, pick an intermediate target, and commit fully before you swing.
DC
Damage Control
If things go wrong, switch into damage control mode immediately. The question is no longer how do I make a great shot. It is how do I stop this hole from getting any worse?
Run through this on every shot and you will catch yourself before you make the decisions that cost you three or four strokes in a single hole. It does not require a better swing. It just requires a better thought process.
The golfer who shoots in the 80s is not trying to hit perfect shots. They are trying not to hit stupid ones. That is a completely different mindset, and it is one you can adopt today.
When you stop measuring your round by how many great shots you hit and start measuring it by how many mistakes you avoided, everything shifts. Bogeys feel manageable. A bad drive does not spiral into a triple. You walk off the course feeling like you competed instead of just survived.
You already have enough game to score better. You just need a better system for using what you have.
That is what TrueSpin Golf is built on. Not swing tips. Not equipment advice. A smarter way to think on the course so that the ability you already have actually shows up in your score.
